I take this graph out of the SA loose rants draft listing, which I almost never go in to look at, and I see this. Oh my, I don’t remember putting this in here nor where I found it, it comes from weeks or months! But anyway, it’s here and it’s interesting. It’s a prediction for 2013, a change that probably most media will leave unnoticed. But that’s not completely devoid of consequences, it’s an important move. Whatever happens, whether it indeed happens this year or next, and of course this is just gross bean counting, one cannot dismiss the shift. And in a decade probably, the world science leading country will have changed.

This basically means that creationists can take over the USA, it won’t matter anymore to the world. It won’t matter if science education in the USA get rotten to the bone anymore. Startling perspective? Well, this would not be the first example of Golden Age past.

According to the ID theory (we’re really in need to put things in, given the almost empty basis proponents are leaving us with –don’t forget that it’s also an open minded theory according to Pratchett’s definition), all things natural should directly point out, not only as to how perfectly designed creatures are, but also as to how their wonderful behaviour is designed. Based on this assumption, Seeds Aside just keeps noticing just how far certain natural behaviours require further explanation under an ID view of life… Here are we back for this single but recurrent observation, so… ID proponentsists (or the other creationist kinds), any word about it?

So this is my take on Linnaeus Legacy. I have to admit that I was really wondering how to put pieces together into a coherent and decent prosaic carnival (at least it seems coherent now). Eventually, things went out straight naturally, and I am left with wondering if this has actually a meaning or not. I’ll let you consider the question and make your mind about it.

But first I have an important disclaimer to add: it is your responsability if you read this. I know we’re still with Linneaus Legacy below 18, but my intent is only educationnal. I sincerely apologise for destroying my fellow bloggers efforts into decent science popularisation. Any other interpretation is your own only.

It’s above Expelled  being exposed for what it is, a shameful piece of typical fraudulent creationist propaganda. Greg Laden’s has an excellent piece about the case bringing the (cell) gap into a general public discussion. Maybe he’s right, and American people may eventually end up with a better understanding and knowledge than any other people worldwide as to what cells are made of and as to how they function. Finally creationism has found its use: serve as an anchor to educate lay people into the true nature wonders… Or would the compulsive commitment to a fair treatment occuring there (actually completely unfair since it’s giving equal weight to a handful of lies) become the major cultural obstacle to a better understanding of the world?

Ah, fair treatment. Let’s revive the stork theory… (more…)

Expelled… This is all you have to do.

Expelled. For a consequent and factual presentation of flaws and frauds in the Expelled movie.

In case you don’t read the blogs from my bog roll (on the right side, frankly you should read them!), and you’re not in the USA at all, and creationism is not your cup of tea (you’re lucky then, but beware what your children are told at school), then don’t bother. For more details, here or here and drift from these should introduce you to the story.

A bit for bat

Massimo Pigliucci summarizes a recent paper in nature about the long standing question as to whether bats evolved flight or echolocation first. Answer developped there. Case closed. Or is it?

You’ll find in his post a marvellous point about science:

But that is what’s truly amazing about science: you can literally wake up one morning and find that someone has figured out the answer to a question that has vexed people for decades, sometimes centuries.

As far as I can tell, meeting creationists is quite always a really boring event. I mean, far too many creationists are not only ill-informed or blindfully ignorant, but they are also proud of it. But I would lie like one if I would write there isn’t any honest and respectful creationist in the world. I met one. Incredible, but true. And it’s actually one of my most pleasant memory.

Well, at least we are trying. Read here and follow links up there…

P.S. : I’m still almost doing field work. I still don’t have time; days are too short even for our experiment. But I’m coming back soon I promise!

I was recently asked for use of one of my picture on flickR to illustrate a student book. When reading this, I readily became very happy: at least my picture is going to be somewhat usefull for biology students. Alas, as I was reading, it became clear very soon that my picture was about to be used in a pro-Intelligent Design creationist text-book.

In the beginning, there were the New York Dolls singing a very inspired text. Even little daughter like it so much…

When she’ll grow up a little bit more, she’ll learn this other lesson by heart too…
